Description

French Onion Ground Beef is a rich, comforting casserole that combines hearty beef, savory French onion soup, and fluffy rice into a warm and satisfying dish. Perfect for cozy family dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef – Provides a rich, savory base for the dish.
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon garlic salt – Enhances the beef’s flavor; adjust to your taste.
  • 2 (10.5-ounce) cans beef consommé – Adds depth and richness to the casserole.
  • 2 (10.5-ounce) cans French onion soup – Delivers classic onion flavor and a comforting aroma.
  • ¾ cup water – Helps create the right consistency for cooking the rice.
  • 2 cups uncooked long grain white rice – Soaks up all the savory flavors as it cooks.
  • ¾ cup butter, cut into slices – Adds richness and ensures the dish is extra creamy and flavorful.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Shredded cheese: Try Swiss or mozzarella for a gooey, melty topping.
  • Breadcrumbs: For a crispy, golden finish on top.
  • Chopped fresh herbs: Parsley or chives add color and freshness before serving.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed and season with garlic salt.
  3. Mix liquids: In a large bowl, combine beef consommé, French onion soup, and water. Stir well.
  4. Assemble the casserole: In a large 9×13-inch baking dish, spread the uncooked rice evenly. Layer the cooked ground beef over the rice. Pour the soup mixture over the beef and rice, making sure everything is covered.
  5. Add butter: Evenly place slices of butter over the top of the mixture.
  6. Bake: Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20–25 minutes, or until rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  7. Optional toppings: Add shredded cheese or breadcrumbs during the last 10 minutes of baking if desired.
  8. Serve: Let sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh finish.

Notes

  • Make sure to cover the dish well during the initial bake to ensure the rice cooks through.
  • Can substitute ground turkey or chicken if preferred.
  • Try using brown rice, but extend baking time and add more liquid if needed.
