Description
French Onion Ground Beef is a rich, comforting casserole that combines hearty beef, savory French onion soup, and fluffy rice into a warm and satisfying dish. Perfect for cozy family dinners or potlucks.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound lean ground beef – Provides a rich, savory base for the dish.
- ½ to 1 teaspoon garlic salt – Enhances the beef’s flavor; adjust to your taste.
- 2 (10.5-ounce) cans beef consommé – Adds depth and richness to the casserole.
- 2 (10.5-ounce) cans French onion soup – Delivers classic onion flavor and a comforting aroma.
- ¾ cup water – Helps create the right consistency for cooking the rice.
- 2 cups uncooked long grain white rice – Soaks up all the savory flavors as it cooks.
- ¾ cup butter, cut into slices – Adds richness and ensures the dish is extra creamy and flavorful.
Optional Add-Ons:
- Shredded cheese: Try Swiss or mozzarella for a gooey, melty topping.
- Breadcrumbs: For a crispy, golden finish on top.
- Chopped fresh herbs: Parsley or chives add color and freshness before serving.
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed and season with garlic salt.
- Mix liquids: In a large bowl, combine beef consommé, French onion soup, and water. Stir well.
- Assemble the casserole: In a large 9×13-inch baking dish, spread the uncooked rice evenly. Layer the cooked ground beef over the rice. Pour the soup mixture over the beef and rice, making sure everything is covered.
- Add butter: Evenly place slices of butter over the top of the mixture.
- Bake: Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20–25 minutes, or until rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Optional toppings: Add shredded cheese or breadcrumbs during the last 10 minutes of baking if desired.
- Serve: Let sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh finish.
Notes
- Make sure to cover the dish well during the initial bake to ensure the rice cooks through.
- Can substitute ground turkey or chicken if preferred.
- Try using brown rice, but extend baking time and add more liquid if needed.
