Ingredients

Scale

Essentials:

  • 1 (16-ounce) can refried beans
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 ounces sour cream, divided
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1 (12-ounce) container tomato salsa (or 16-ounce)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 small soft flour tortillas
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 cup assorted cherry tomatoes, halved

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Sliced jalapeños for heat
  • Diced avocados for creaminess
  • Black olives for texture

Substitutions & Shortcuts:

  • Refried beans: Use homemade mashed beans or any bean dip
  • Cream cheese: Swap for plain Greek yogurt
  • Taco seasoning: Make a mix of cumin, chili powder, and garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Make the Base Dip: In a mixing bowl, blend softened cream cheese and half of the sour cream until smooth. Stir in refried beans and taco seasoning until well combined. Spread evenly on a large serving platter.
  2. Add Layers: Spoon salsa over the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle black beans, shredded cheddar, green onions, cilantro, and cherry tomatoes over the top in a decorative fashion.
  3. Prepare Tortilla Headstones: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut tortillas into fun headstone shapes. Brush both sides lightly with olive oil and bake on a sheet for about 10 minutes until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble Graveyard: Insert baked tortilla headstones into the dip to resemble a spooky graveyard. Optionally, add avocado slices or olives for extra decoration. Finish with a dollop of remaining sour cream for a ghostly effect.
  5. Serve: Serve immediately with tortilla chips or veggies for dipping.

Notes

  • For a colorful twist, layer in shredded purple cabbage or roasted corn.
  • Make it ahead of time: prepare dip and toppings separately, then assemble right before serving.
  • Try mini tortillas for bite-sized headstones for kids’ parties.
