A rich and comforting homemade eggnog perfect for the holiday season, easy to make and customizable for everyone.

- 4 large eggs, fresh and at room temperature
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Additional ground nutmeg for garnish
- 1/2 cup bourbon or dark rum (optional)
- Ground cinnamon or a cinnamon stick (optional)
- A pinch of salt (optional)
- A splash of almond or maple extract (optional)
- Whipped cream for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Allow eggs to reach room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until pale, thickened, and frothy.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk and cream over medium heat until hot and steamy, but not boiling.
- Slowly temper the eggs by adding half a cup of the hot milk mixture while whisking constantly.
- Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk and cream and cook on low heat, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.
- Remove from heat; stir in vanilla extract and nutmeg. Optionally add bourbon or rum.
- Cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight.
- Strain if necessary, stir, and serve in glasses or mugs, garnished with additional nutmeg or whipped cream.
