- 1 pound box of phyllo dough (9×14 sheets, room temperature)
- 1 cup (2 sticks) melted butter
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups granulated sugar, divided
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon rose water
- 1/4 cup crushed pistachios, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Take two sheets of phyllo dough at a time and gently crinkle them, placing them into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for about 10 minutes to crisp up the phyllo.
- Pour the remaining melted butter over the crinkled phyllo and bake for another 12 minutes, until golden and crispy.
- Whisk together milk, eggs, 1 cup of the sugar, cardamom, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
- Pour the custard over the baked phyllo.
- Bake again for about 40 minutes until the custard is set and golden brown.
- Prepare the syrup by boiling the remaining sugar and water, then stirring in rose water after thickening.
- Once the cake is baked, drizzle the cooled syrup over it and garnish with crushed pistachios.
Notes
Keep unused phyllo covered with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.
