Description

A delightful dessert made with layers of crispy phyllo dough, a rich custard, and a sweet syrup, offering a unique texture and flavor.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound box of phyllo dough (9×14 sheets, room temperature)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) melted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon rose water
  • 1/4 cup crushed pistachios, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Take two sheets of phyllo dough at a time and gently crinkle them, placing them into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Bake for about 10 minutes to crisp up the phyllo.
  4. Pour the remaining melted butter over the crinkled phyllo and bake for another 12 minutes, until golden and crispy.
  5. Whisk together milk, eggs, 1 cup of the sugar, cardamom, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
  6. Pour the custard over the baked phyllo.
  7. Bake again for about 40 minutes until the custard is set and golden brown.
  8. Prepare the syrup by boiling the remaining sugar and water, then stirring in rose water after thickening.
  9. Once the cake is baked, drizzle the cooled syrup over it and garnish with crushed pistachios.

Notes

Keep unused phyllo covered with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.
