Indulge in these tender Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls with cocoa notes and a tangy cream cheese frosting, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened (for the filling)
  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Milk, as needed (for thinning frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and yeast.
  2. In a small saucepan, warm the milk with melted butter until pleasantly warm (100–110°F).
  3. Stir the warm milk-butter mixture into the dry ingredients, then add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 45–60 minutes).
  6. Roll the risen dough into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle and spread softened butter on top. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over the butter.
  7. Tightly roll the dough from the long side into a log and slice into 9-12 rolls.
  8. Arrange the rolls in a greased pan, cover, and let rise for another 20–30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes until set and soft in the center.
  10. To make frosting, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Thin with milk as desired.
  11. Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor and texture. Optional add-ins like nuts or espresso powder can enhance the rolls.
