Instructions

- Cool and Add Yeast: Pour the milk mixture into a stand mixer bowl (or large mixing bowl). Cool to ~110°F, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the Dough: Add 2 3/4 cups flour and 1 tsp salt. Mix on low until incorporated. Add orange food coloring and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth.
- First Rise: Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, until doubled in size.
- Roll Out the Dough: Punch down the dough and roll into a 12×16 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Make the Filling: Spread softened butter over the dough. Mix brown sugar, black cocoa, cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt, and vanilla; spread evenly. Sprinkle chocolate chips if using.
- Create the Rolls: Roll dough lengthwise into a log. Cut into 12 slices (~1 1/4 inch thick). Arrange in a greased 9×16 pan.
- Second Rise: Cover and let rise for 45 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F.
- Bake: Bake rolls for 20–22 minutes until golden brown. Let rest 5 minutes.
